Course description

On completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
• describe the physical and chemical properties of the different substance classes in heterocyclic chemistry.
• describe the different methods for synthesis of the ring system of the different substance classes in heterocyclic chemistry.
• describe the different methods for the derivatization of the ring system of the different substance classes in heterocyclic chemistry.
• account for the different mechanisms for the formation and derivatisation of the different ring systems in heterocyclic chemistry.

Skills and abilities
• suggest methods for the synthesis of a given heterocyclic compound.
• suggest mechanism for the formation of a given heterocyclic compound.
• from a given structure of a heterocyclic compound being able to suggest its physical and chemical properties.

Judgement and approach
• to evaluate reaction pathways to target heterocyclic molecules in terms of economy and environmental benignity.

Course content

Physical and chemical properties of aromatic(main part) and non-aromatic heterocyclic compounds. The synthesis of the ring systems of aromatic (main part) and non-aromatic heterocyclic compounds. The derivatization of the ring systems of aromatic (main part) and non-aromatic heterocyclic compounds. The mechanisms for the formation and derivatization of the different ring systems of heterocyclic compounds. Although the course course comprises both aromatic and non-aromatic heterocyclic compounds, the emphasis is on aromatic systems.
