Joakim Stenhammar: The thermodynamics of bird flocks
Plats: Kemicentrum, Lecture hall B
Public readership lecture / "Docentföreläsning" with Dr Joakim Stenhammar, Associate Senior Lecturer at Physical Chemistry, Lund University.
In this lecture, I will talk about how theoretical concepts from thermodynamics and statistical physics, traditionally used for describing phase transitions in materials, can help us understand how birds fly together in flocks. The talk will focus on the so-called Vicsek model of flocking, proposed in 1995, as well as on recent results from field experiments on bird flocks.
