Dr Hetherington joined Prof. Wallenberg's group in Lund in 2011 to support the electron microscopy work in nCHREM, the national Center for High-Resolution Electron Microscopy. From 2016 his principal role has been the Lund Coordinator of an SSF-funded research infrastructure called "Atomic Resolution Cluster" or ARC, working with Prof Per Persson of Linköping University.
Dr. Hetherington received his undergraduate degree in Materials Science at Oxford University in 1982. His postgraduate studies were carried out with Prof Colin Humphreys at Oxford University on the topic of Transmission Electron Microscopy of Semiconductor layers, and this led to a DPhil in 1987.
His career has been mainly within research support in electron microscopy, including working as a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and as director of the electron microscope facility in the Department of Materials in Oxford. While in Oxford, he was in charge of operating the first aberration-corrected TEM in the UK. He has also held posts in Madrid, Sheffield and he was a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Cambridge.
